Children

A specially designated area in the Children’s Room serves as the locus of information and resources for parents, caregivers and family serving professionals. We know that parenting is a rewarding but often challenging endeavor. An extensive variety of resources and services are available to support families.

Parents Collection

This comprehensive multimedia collection includes information in a variety of formats for parents, caregivers and professionals. All aspects of parenting and family life, child development, health and nutrition, education, recreation and travel, discipline, disabilities and special health conditions, child care, and much more are covered in this collection

which includes:

  • 16,000 books
  • 3,000 DVDs and videos
  • 150+ newsletters & periodicals
  • Circulating toys and circulating adaptive toys
  • Displays of current news and information for parents
  • Brochures and fliers available from a wide variety of community organizations that serve families

Hospital Kits

A circulating kit of materials, targeted to parents of children entering the hospital, is available to residents of the Middle Country community.

There are two versions: a primary age (pre-K through 3rd grade) and an intermediate kit (4th grade and up). Each kit contains:

  • 16,000 books
  • 3,000 DVDs and videos
  • 150+ newsletters & periodicals
  • Circulating toys and circulating adaptive toys
  • Displays of current news and information for parents
  • Brochures and fliers available from a wide variety of community organizations that serve families

Infant Kits

A free information kit (available in English or Spanish) for expectant and new parents to keep is available to all families in the community. A typical infant kit includes information on:

  • Prenatal and new baby care
  • Local childbirth preparation class locations
  • Breastfeeding tips
  • Infant development and infant stimulation activities
  • Library programs for new parents and babies
  • Nursery rhymes to stimulate early language development
  • Bibliography of resources for new parents
  • Developmental milestones in the early years
  • Safety information
  • Bibliography of the very earliest books for infants
  • Local maternal child health and nutrition programs
  • Welcoming letter from the library

Early Intervention Family Resource Kits

Early Intervention Kits are intended to help parents who are concerned about their young child’s development or who know that their young child has some type of disability or developmental delay. The kit is

  • Developmental milestones in the early years
  • Safety information
  • Bibliography of the very earliest books for infants
  • Local maternal child health and nutrition programs
  • Welcoming letter from the library
