Motorola Solution Foundation Awards $20,000 to support the Jumpstart Science Initiative: Math Buddies, an innovative program that pairs teens with children in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. The goal of the program is to incorporate the ideals of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative into the learning process. Prior to serving as a Math Buddy, teens participate in training sessions to learn math and mentoring skills and strategies, and to integrate technology into the learning experience.
During the sessions, teens mentor their buddies in math concepts, play web-based math games, use iPads with interactive math applications and read aloud to their partners. Each session of the Math Buddies program focuses on a specific topic, such as money, addition and subtraction, data and graphs, patterns, time and measurement.
